He had tried several treatments: liquids, heat, cold, ginger extracts, and yes, some spikenard
roots which had traces of arsenic, but not at a poisonous level, and once he had observed no
noticeable change in Bianca’s symptoms, he had long ago stopped prescribing such roots. It was
not science which was about to kill the Medicis, but disease.
