Chapter 56.
So goats
Aurelio awoke with the gnawing feeling he’d missed something with his facile
interpretation of the old woman and the Bread of Life. That seemed too much of a dead end.
(There is conjured a familiar scene: by the side of the foot-stove in the mid-sixteenth-century
Florentine artist’s studio. But gone is the familiar if drunken Half-Wit Tozzo, and in his place is
a much more serious Imaginary Santi del Meglio. Santi is smug and covered, in a way which
Aurelio finds annoying.)
Aurelio: (referring to the old woman and the Bread of Life) Yes, we all grow old and miss
our youth. And so, what’s your point, Santi?
Santi: Stand back and observe.
Aurelio: I did that.
Santi: Do it again.
