Growing Regrets
Between his father, the clues in the ceiling, and writing and illustrating the folio, Santi
had more than enough to do, so he stopped visiting the Wheat and Chaff. He fretted he would
soon be off to Austria or Switzerland and wouldn’t see his chums again. He’d miss Tozzo, the
brute, but more would he miss Carola, of all people, with her winning smile and
generous...personality. He hadn’t seen her since the night of the disastrous wagering on Blind
Man’s Birch, and he was regretful if that would turn out to have been his farewell from her. I
must visit her before I leave.
