To an alchemist steeped in the use of symbols and allegories, the meaning of the
paintings and the connections between them was obvious, even blatant and amateurish.

         Zaccario said, “The girl with the green scarf. Do you see her?”
         “The naked one?” asked Pulveri.
         “They’re practically all naked. They call it art.”
         “I like it.”
         “The girl is pointing to the blue banner. She’s saying, ‘Start here.’”
         “I’ll follow her anywhere.”
