“Semantics. The music is so...beautiful.”
“Is it? I'm so used to it. I don't hear it anymore.”
“If you could just lead me to the gates even, and I'll look through. I won't
go in. Demons won't walk in where angels fear they'll tread.”
         “The answer's no.”
         “Blindfold me. I'll smell it.”
“I'm going to ask you to leave now.” She was growing physically stiffer
with him.
“Please. A glance. A whiff. Just something to take back with me.”
“I'm perfectly within my rights to kill you, dragon. You're trespassing.”
         “I saved your child.”
“I'm not so sure about that. He said you were going to burn him.”
“I wasn't. That was to get your attention.”
“You've had more than enough of my attention. You now have three
choices. You can leave of your own recognizance, or I can escort you out of our
Realm, or I can call my Husband. Five. Four. Three --”
“The escort.” With a breaking heart, Fuocorogo followed Lydia as they
turned back and headed back to Hell. Fuocorogo gave one last glance over his
shoulder to hear the last curling wisp of the music as it drifted upwards and
faded into silence.
“On second thought,” said Fuocorogo, “I'll go back alone.”
         “Very well.”
