Santi took the vial and nodded, though inside he was not terrible convinced either that he
understood the learned doctor's words, or, that he would follow them. This new medicine,
thought Santi, so filled with hypotheses, experiments, data, and tests. Whereas bloodletting,
that's been around for hundreds of years; it must be effective. Mustn't it? But Santi saw the
kindness in the eyes of Dr. Ludovico Valerius, and felt a trust in him which he had not felt
before. So, “Yes,” he said to the doctor, “I will bring you a sample of my father's urine for your
analysis.”

         And this he did.
         Dr. Valerius was deeply saddened by the results of his analysis. Santi's father was not
going to survive the summer.
