Translator’s Note. The Fifth Story. Here was the original location of the
fifth story, The Dragon Who Would Glimpse Heaven. It had no commentary
attached, which I find odd. It makes me wonder whether there was commentary
at some point but it got removed. I can’t prove this theory, of course, but it
wouldn’t surprise me that along with the burning of the copies of the original
Italian version, there was also some expurgation of some of the pages of the
English version. The English version would have appeared some sixty or seventy
years after the Duchess’s death, but there were Medician heirs who might have
felt it in their best interests to destroy such commentary.
